Serious writers do not use print on demand publishing. This is for many reasons. Print on demand publishing is done with modified Xerox machines. A reputable book publisher will use offset lithography. The difference is glaring to people that buy books for resale.

The content of a book will not even be noticed if print on demand publishing was used. In general, bookstores and libraries do not buy books made with print on demand publishing. They dismiss them out of hand.

If you choose print on demand publishing, you will most likely not meet the required design quality to actually sell your book. If you insist on using print on demand publishing, you should hire a graphic designer to make your cover.

It is very important to remember that by choosing print on demand publishing, you are not getting offset lithography. Book buyers can spot books made by print on demand publishing even if consumers cannot.

Distribution is a very important part of selling books. If you choose print on demand publishing, you will need to realize that Quality Books, the distributor to Americas libraries, will not purchase books made by print on demand publishing. Unique books, the second-tier library distributor, also will not purchase books made with print on demand publishing.

Books need publicity and marketing to get sold. If you chose print on demand publishing, you will not get publicity or marketing. A publishers job is to promote your book. If you chose print on demand publishing, you just dont get the promotion that it takes to sell books.

Ultimately, it's a writer's job to write a book; it's the publisher's job to make sure that book is positioned competitively. To be sold, a book must be placed in a known BISAC category. After the book is placed in a category, it must compete within that category. When you use print on demand publishing, you do not have a professional to navigate the position of your book.

To successfully use print on demand publishing, you must hire a publicity agent and marketing person. You must also have your book professionally copyedited by someone other than yourself.

A better choice than print on demand publishing is to have your book designed by a professional book packager and printed by an offset lithographer and then secure national distribution.
