Benefits To Being A Self Publisher

By: Michael Russell

Article Word Count: 370

Being a self publisher has a lot of benefits. The first reason is that you dont have to convince a professional that your book should be published. It is not hard to make a good case to yourself for publication of your own work. The level of enthusiasm that you bring to your own projects is unmatched. There is no reason to give a third party, with intentions, interests, and priorities different from your own, the final say. When you are a self publisher, you have total control.

Secondly, if you have filled an existing void with your book and are able to create a demand for it, you will make a lot more money than you would make with a standard publishing contract. A standard publishing contract can sometimes only give you a five to fifteen percent royalty. If you are a self publisher, you could make twenty to eighty percent of the purchase price of your book.

You have a better position for negotiation with a publisher if you have been a successful self publisher. You would be able to approach them from a position of experience and strength. This gives you so much more credibility than if you had never chosen to self publish.

When you are a self publisher, you get to experience an almost immediate result for your effort. After you complete a manuscript, it can be anywhere from a few weeks to just a few months before seeing your book. Large publishers often work on an eighteen month cycle and you would be waiting a pretty long time before seeing your book in print.

Amazon.com is a great venue for the self publisher. There are other fantastic places to sell your book if you want to, like BanesAndNoble.com. These venues offer the self publisher amazing exposure to the intended audience.

Being a self publisher is not always about creating a book that will generate millions of dollars in revenue. Sometimes being a self publisher just makes preservation of history or heritage possible. Photo albums are no longer the only vehicle for telling your own story.
