Self Publishing Advantages

By: Michael Russell

Article Word Count: 600

Self publishing is commonly perceived as an option when you can’t publish a book with a major publishing company. The stigma in the past for self publishers was that the author wasn’t good enough for corporate publishers. Or, the author was an unknown in the industry and couldn’t find ways to get published. These days, self-publishing doesn’t hold the same stigma. In fact, there are many reasons why a person would want to self publish.

Writers look to self publishing because publishers may take too long to approve their manuscript. Sometimes it may take a long time to get a response from the company, leaving the writer weary of the delays. Because of the thousands of submissions to these companies, it’s difficult for them to respond in a timely manner. Self publishing provides a viable alternative. Instead of worrying about responses and approvals from the publishing firm, a writer can get his or her manuscript published in a matter of a few months.

Also, self publishing can provide a writer with almost instant credibility. Having a book published will highlight a person’s expertise.

For a book that relies on time sensitive distribution, self publishing allows writers to be flexible to recent news events, political issues, or something buzz-worthy. Why not be the first to get a book out on a recent catastrophe? Being the first could equate to better sales than a late publication.

Publishing companies may edit or change someone’s manuscript to the point that it’s unrecognizable for the writer. It’s not uncommon that a writer feels that the manuscript was changed from its original intent. Self publishing can allow the writer to keep his or her own manuscript intact, without major changes. Remember, publishers are in it to make a profit. They may change the content so that it sells. If you feel that you want more control of the publication, self publishing might be a good option.

More often, even the choice of the book cover and design will be at the discretion of the publisher. A writer that self publishes his or her own book has the ability to design the copy and even select the type of paper and book style.

So, what type of book is best for self publishing? For publishing companies, books that sell well to the masses are the ones they will accept. This means that a “niche” writer may not have a great chance to get publish versus a main stream writer. A person who is an expert in ping pong balls or wall molding may be better suited for self publishing.

Rights to your manuscript may be taken away, depending on the contract with the publisher. Through self publishing, you can maintain the rights to your own work. This means that you can sell your right to someone else or make money from your own rights.

A self-published book can provide you with more control even with the marketing efforts. It’s possible that the publisher may not spend enough time promoting your book. Consider how committed the publishing company is with your book promotion. If you feel that you can do better, consider taking the self publishing route.

Self publishing has many advantages for not just the new and struggling writer, but others as well. Writing for oneself provides more freedom and control.
